How do I dress?

Shiatsu is practiced fully clothed and involves some movement so wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing (preferably in cotton or natural fibre). Jogging bottoms rather than jeans or a skirt.

How long does Shiatsu last? A full Shiatsu treatment lasts about 45mins to an hour. An initial consultation may take an extra 10mins.

Coming for a Shiatsu

Wear loose fitting clothing preferably in cotton or natural fibre ie. comfortable, roomy trousers, tee shirt and cotton socks. You remain fully clothed during treatment.

Avoid eating a heavy meal or drinking alcohol before the session.

Before Shiatsu commences a confidential, personal history will be taken, including details of any medication you may be on.

Shiatsu is normally given on a padded mat at floor level, or sometimes sitting on a chair or on a massage table.

Your practitioner may offer some advice concerning posture, breathing and nutrition and even demonstrate exercises to be practiced at home.

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of body-work, which at its highest level combines a finely tuned intuition with an understanding of the body/mind. It is the art of applying therapeutic pressure to the surface of the skin to enhance vitality and well-being.

We enjoy good health when our energy is flowing freely. Where there is stagnation or blockage, deficiency or excess, we will be out of balance. Naturally the body is moving towards balance, but we can throw ourselves out of alignment with stressful issues and Shiatsu can assist us to adjust to a better level of health. If minor imbalances are not corrected more chronic conditions and disease will flourish. Working physically with stretching of limbs helps the energy lines (meridians) to open, facilitating the use of acupressure points (tsubos).

As a massage treatment it is useful for dispersing physical tension from the muscles and soft tissue, this is often where the energy or “chi” is blocked and when freed up will move to where it is needed or deficient. However, if the client is low on energy or emotionally exhausted the session will involve more “hands on”, holding and a tonifying type treatment.

The Shiatsu treatment promotes deeper breathing from the abdomen, which helps us to relax and be in receptive mode. It is like having “time out” while someone else gives you a work out!

In this technological age, which is so mechanised, Shiatsu emphasizes human connection and co-operation. It is about living in harmony with nature and remembering our true essence, encompassing life style and attitude, it’s not just a therapy. Whether giving or receiving Shiatsu, it is enjoyable, relaxing and balancing. Additionally, shiatsu assists my connection to a peaceful place in myself, which is energizing and healing for me too.

Before beginning a treatment I ground and centre myself, and aiming for an empty mind, I tune in on an energetic level with the receiver. It is always my intention to create a sacred space for the client to promote the atmosphere for self-healing. Shiatsu techniques are my tools and I genuinely wish to help those who are ready and willing to make changes in their lifestyle and diet to improve their health, vitality and well-being.
